WELLINGTON.
The sentence of death passed on William Kno-wles, aliaa W. A. R. Freeman, for the mtirder of his wife at Palmerston North has been commuted to imprisonment for life. Knowles, it will be remembered, visited his wife, with whom he was not living, at Palmerston North, and after they had conversed for some time the woman walked away. Knowles followed, seized the- woman, fired two shots at her. and then turned the revolver on himself, but the- machinery having gone out of gear the weapon would not go off.
