BALCLUTHA POULTRY SHOW.

Patron. Mr A. S. Malcolm, H.H.R. ; president, Mr William Gueat; vice-presidents, Messrs J. S. Fleming and D. G. Algie; secretary and treasurer, Mr Duncan Watt; committee—Messrs Jsmes Wilkina, R. R. Grigor, John Agnew, T. R. Mackay, V. Ingram, H. Rumsey, James Ludlow, A. L. Rooney, Robert Grigor (sen.), John Crawford, Peter M»»n, Thomas Gilmour. and James Christie. The third annual show under the auspices of tbe Balclutha Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club was opened in the local Oddfellows 5 Hall late yesterday afternoon, and the function promises to prove a greater success than anythiug of the kind, previously bold in the Clutha. In regartl to quality, in the words of those , who are fully competent to «ay so, the show was unquestionably successful, and outside the city exhibitions of feathered bipeds,^ thi* show will rank amongst the highest- in re gam io the general excellence of .Ihe Bens. Apart from the outside entries received, the district, as well ' as die society, is' " to be heartßy congratulated upon this fact Judging was commenced in the morning <the hall being closed in the afternoon until 4 o'clock, out 6& respect to the memory of the late Right Hbn. R. J. Seddon, and was completed expeditiously, this most important duty being in the capable hands of Mr Edwin Reilly, assisted by Mr T. P. Burke, Government poultry expert. The entries totalled 315 birds, this being a numerical advancement of 25 as compared with the previous year's exhibition. The pens were laid out and classified in the most, up-to-date manner, the arduous work in connection with the exhibition being principally undertaken by Messrs Guest, T. R. MaokaT, Crawford, Ludlow, Ingram, and Wilkins, while ihe secretaryship was capably filled by Mr D. Watt, to whom the thanks of both fhp public and press are due. Though the hour was late when the hall was thrown open, the attendance was good, including a number of visitors from the country, and in the evening a large share of patronage was confidently expected. Of the show itself the judge s remarks to our reporter are sufficient: — "Of the game jßhown the best bird was an old English game code, but the class was not so well supported. The bantams were very fair, indeed, and I can say of the Hamburgs that they were better here than in Christchurch. "There was a fair entry, and the birds were all of merit. Plymouth Rocka were very disappointing. Mr H. S. Jones s winning brown leghorn hen I awarded the honour of being the best bird in the show. She was a fine specimen of her class, and, taking the brown Leghorns throughout, they were of a good standard. The same remark applies to the white Leghorns. In regard to Leghorns, and particularly white Leghorns, breeders must have type to be successful. A number of otherwise good birds in the ' whites' were at a disadvantage |in this respect. As far as possible, I have ! given mr awards taking into considera- | tion quality Jtnd type. It is that that goes !to make a Leghorn. There are not many i Langshans. but those shown are of excel- ' lent quality. Wyandottes induced a big entry, and" some really good birds were penned. From the public point of view, it may appear that some of the best birds have been passed over, but I found on examination that a number of the birds either had V-shaped lacing or were just what we call spangled in the breast. A fault amongst the silver Wyandotles was the fact that the bulk of the birds had on the outer edge a tince of frosting. What we want in silver Wyandottes particularly is a pood black and white, and due regard must be given to type, fineness of bone, and general quality. Tbe silver Wvandottes here compare very favourably with those exhibited in Christchurch. Golden Wyandottes do not call for any special mention. White Wyandottes, as far as Quality is concerned, are a feature of the show, some of the birds being excellent in type and carriage. They are particular! v good in type, and type is _ a great deal, the pullets, hens, and the winninjr cockerel (George Aitcbeson) being notable in this resoect. The finest type of Wyandotte in the ' whites 5 was Mr Shutt's cock, ■which showed a trifle of fcfraw on the wing saddle hackles. There was nothing special in Minoreas, 1 am sorry to say, but some erood birds were shown amongst the Orpingtons. In thi3 class breeders want to puard ag-ainst coarseness of bone, looseness in feather, and too much fluff. As with the other birds, quality, type, and condition count before size. In buff Orpingtons there was a really good class, though not numerous. The qual'tv was first class, and 1 the birds shown would have been placed in Christchurch. The ladies' Inacclet *m-

petition was one of the feature* of the show, and a difficult class to judge, owing to the extensive entry and the variety of breeds. Docks were an exceptionally strong class. I have judged a good number of shows, but never in the colonies have I seen such excellent ail-round quality as at the local show. The duck which carried off the South Island Poultry Association's 1906 championship (Jas. Mouat) is one of the finest Pekins I have ever seen, and the association was quite justified in conferring the championship on the Balclutha Society. A number of the birds in the duck classes that two or three years ago would have been regarded as marvels of size and quality to-day have to take second place, showing that we are progressing in this respect. The Indian * Runner ducks are also really good. Altogether it is the finest collection of ducks I have ever seen under one roof." The show will bo open to-day and thi3 evening, when independent attractions are promised. Mr T. P. Burke, Gorernmont poultry grader, will give an exhibition of plucking and trussing in the afternoon.
