The following interesting game was played between Messrs M. Hankius (late arrival in New Zealand from Home) and Mr Bender.
Game 6144.— '
" Fife."
(b) Forms Problem 2379, Otago Witness.
(c) Solution to Problem 2379. This beautiful finish has been enjoyed by readers everywhere. Both Mr Hankuie's problems have been spoken of as " gems." The solution of his other ending will be found among the solutions to problems last week.
The undernoted interesting game from the People's Journal was played at Johannesburg in a match between the famous Harry Freedman and J. Oatee.
The Wo following instructive games were contested recently between Messrs, Jas. Gardiner and J. A. Soreham.
Boreham, won.
(a) A far-sighted sacrifice. An ex-champion of the colony among the onlookers exclaimed at once: " Here, why didn't you go 22 13, gain a man, and win?" '"Because," replied Mr Borehnm, " I don't believe it will win." And after analysis showed 22 18 to be only a draw. The learner will observe that 23 18 forces 16 19, then 27 24, and White gains a. man.
(b) Seems to be nothing better. (c) 8 12 loses at once; the game is done anyway. (d) 23 19 only draws. Game 6146. —" Dundee."
(a) Cam anyone show -where White gets astray in the foregoing?
