Chess Items.

Mr J. Swindley is the winner this, year of the championship- of the Oamaru Chess Club. A match between the chess players of the Dunedin Athenaeum and Mechanics' Institute and members of the Otago Chess Club is likely to take place at an eaily date.

The 25th telegraphic match between Victoria and New South Wales was played on June 4. Victoria won the toss, and took the move at the odd.-numbered boards. The pairing of the players (the name of the Victorian representative being in each case placed first) and the results of the play were as follow:—Board I— F. H. Wilson, 0, v. S. Crakanthorpe, 1. H. B. Bignold, I— the star indicating an unfinished game. The total score showed New South Wales to have gained 5i points as against Victoria's I£. Mr Henry Charlick. of Adelaide, is to adjudicate on the unfinished games. Dr R. C.
