From thr appended comparative table of entries received for the Wellington Steeplechase meeting it will be seen that although tbo figures fall somewhat short of last year, they are very satisfactory. The list includes a' l the- best jumpers available — viz., Sol, Kaitere, Haydn, and Irish, also the best hurdlers iv Exmoor, Slow Tom, and Cavalry. Kremlin has only been engaged in the flat events. The Auckland contingent engaged is stronger

Achiiles has been engaged in the Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps al Randwick in September. The champion may be taken over for the weight-for-age races, and have a go in on. of the handicaps if he gets a reasonable weight.

The deceased served his time with Mr W. C. Webb at Riccarton, and, as a light weight, won races for that owner on Vauaress. Vce:»wick, May, and other horses when the Bush Inn s tables sheltered a good string. In 1990 he won tho New Zealand Cup on Wolverine and the Canterbury Cup oir Cracksbot in the colours of Mr P. Butlet, who attended the funeral. He afterwards journeyed to Victoria, and rode Glen oth in the Cau'field Cup, and was to have ridden him in the Melbourne Cup but for Mike Carmody changing hi 3 mind at the last minute. Since returning to this colony deceased acted as head man in W. D&vis's stable- at the Hutt. He was 30 years of age.
