The May Windsor Magazine is a very , sumptuous spring number, including a fur- ( thcr large instalment of Anthony Hope's ( picturesque romance, " Sophy of Kra- j vonia.'' in which the interest develops into 1 drama even more strenuous than the famous story of " Zenda." Justus Miles Forman's remarkable record of the rovings of a modern Ulysses includes another romantic episode, and among the complete stories tho number holds a long and vigorous yarn told by Robert Barr in his happiest manner, a sombre study of temperament under curious circumstances by Maarten Maartens. nnri the third of the quaint series of " Prehistoric Tales," which Cecil Aldin is illustrating inimitably. I The notable series of reprints from Vanity Fair's famous gallery includes no fewer ( than 24 military cartoons finely reproduced in the original colours. A delightful study of bird life, entitled "The Mallard and His Mate," is made the vehicle of some beautiful illustrations; and under the title of " Beginnings of Fame " the boyhood of certain great literary men is vividly recalled. The " Schoolboy " waxes funnier than ever on the subject of bicycles— apparently he has an out-grown machine to dispose of. and no one should miss his remarks on this point. Altogether it is a

varied number, packed with interest and entertainment, and superbly illustrated throughout, while the sacred and aecula& pictures of Mr Herbert Sohmalz are "appreciated " in an interesting article, which' is accompanied by no fewer than 17 finq reproductions, including a beautiful frontis^ piece plate of "The Daughters of Judah! in Babylon." Austral Light for June contains thtf usual quantity of reading specially suitably, for Catholic readers. The frontispieoe ij, a well-executed picture of the Ascension. The New Idea makes a departure in itlf competitions this month. Plans of the ifN tenors of six houses are submitted, an^ readers are invited to place the different' designs in the order preferred, at the samg time selecting one which is thought the! best. The reading matter is pleasingly* varied, as usual. Life for June contains a great deal gf interest to readers of all tastes. An int§-< resting feature of this magazine is the reproduction of the cartoons of the month, though more solid pictures are by "no mean neglected.
