June 18. — Nothing startling has taken place here sinoe the date of my last letter. We are all shocked at the sad death of the ] ate Right Hon. Mr Seddon. If consolation can come V> the family from expressions of pity from a sorrowful people, then their loss of a husband and father will be tempered to a bearable degree. St. Bathans, like elsewhere throughout New Zealand, mourns tho loss of a patriot and great statesman, outside grief being shown in the flyi.ig of fla«s half-mast from the first moment of the sad tidings. Mining. — Under this heading of my last letter there appears a grave mistake in the quantity of gold obtained by the M. and E. Company. The report should have read 400oz. When last reporting the company had one moro lift from the tailrace to put through the boxea, which brought the washing of five months up to 4480z. The returns speak volumes for the company, who hold an extensive area of ground in the same locality that the gold has been taken from,
