GORE NEWS NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
GORE, May 10.
The population of the Borough of Gore as show n by the census of the other day is 3040, an increase of 6:6 on the figures of 1901, when the population was 2354. and of 1008 on those of 1896. The population has i increased during the past five- yeiirs by 656, as compared to 322 ou the previous five years. The figures do not give the actual extent to which the population has in- ' creased, as a great growth has taken place 1 just outside the borough boundaries. Were 'these portion's added the population would probably be near 3500. , To-morrow Mr Maearthy, S.M., will hear the charge- against Hanley, :e«see of the Piovincial bcarding-house. of keeping liquor for sale. The charge is the outcome of the recent raid en the premises. As a consequence of correspondence that has passed between the jMataura- Borough Council and the Mines Department, Mr F A. Gordon, of '-hat department, will visit the locality to-day and confer with the council and representatives of .- the dredging industry .so as to arrive at the ; headings requireJ for legislation to place ! the matter on a proper footmg. The recent litigatio-i left tho council in the posjtion of custodians of the tad race and depri?«f it of its sources of revenue.
