MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS.
PARIS, May 1. The railway bridges in Paris and the -cartridge factory at Sevres are guarded by soldiers. Several fresh arrests have been made* on a charge of complicity in rebellion and Anarchist plots. > "Many citizens have extensively ' provisioned their houses, and the supplies of hams and preserves are exhausted. A milch cow was led into a- house on the Rue Royale, and another family stocked" their bath with living fish. Twenty thousand people quitted Paris. Some foreign ; Anarchists were expelled. The morning passed quietly. A lieutenant was arrested for addressing ' the Socialists, urging them to be quiet, but declaring h& would n.qt allow bloodshed' or order the soldiers to fire. ' • One Hundred and fifty arrests were made in^the streets of persons -who refused to move on." -•*■•-. - Documents were seized at- ihe office %£ I1I 1 the Petite Republique' which showed that several retired,.. generals had ■ offered their services to the leaders of the alleged conspiracy. ;' .LONDON, May 2. Labour Day was- "celebrated in most of ' the large cities" on" the Continent without serious disturbances owing to ffre authorities taking precautionary measures wherever the demonstrators were likely to prove disorderly. J A good deal of effervescence occurred" in ; Paris, especially on the Place Republique in connection with the meetings of the .various trades, which -were. '.held' aJl'day' ; in the vicinity of the- Bourse dv Travail ; (the Temple of Trade -Unionism), where . resolutions were passed in favour of ' an J eight hours' day and Sunday rest." ' ' ' Though", .60,000 troops were nn'fler axms s comparatively few were 'visible.". . Some thousands of people -were arrested, chiefly for disobeying the police orders vio moveon, but the greater numbed of them > were afterwards released. More serious ' disorder prevailed towards nightfall, when ! crowds of roughs hooted,- and in ' some . cases stoned, , the patrolling dragoons. Frequent scuffles with the . police took place, but order was maintained without recourse to revolvers or sword 6. - * A bomb was deposited near the Auster- ■ litz bridge, but the fuse was extinguished, and no harm wag done. Several sham . bombs were also found. .• • * Noisy demonstrations took place at' Brest, Bordeaux, and Lyons, but there were, no serious collisions with tHe police at any of these places. Of the 150 persons in custody in con* ■ nection witli the May Day demonstrations 70 are foreigners, mostly Russians. Lieutenant Tisserand will be imprisoned , for 60 clays in a fortress, and then retire-el from the service.
