A poll was taken on Friday pn a petition for the reinstatement of rating on th«
value to let in lieu of rating on the unimproved value of land in Invercargill, which was carried in 1901 by a majority of> 212. the figures being 386 for and 174- ' against. On Friday, on a poll of 762, the majority for continuance was 162, the voting being : ' For. 462 ; agair.et. 300. . The prairie value therefore stand?. Little interest was taken in the matter, there being 1870 | entitled to vote on the question. I There was a shooting affray at Waikaia ion Saturday. A Chinaman named Yen ! Choy fired four revolver shots at another ' celestial. Shin Boon, wounding one leg, but not seriously. The affair was tho outcome of an old feud. At a meeting of the Educational Institute a report was submitted that the chairman of a country committee, apparently with the sanction of the majority of. the* ' members, on grounds that proved trivial, had taken the extreme .stej) of trying to-. suspend a teacher, such action being seri-. ously prejudicial to his reputation. It was resolved to forward a report to the N6w Zealand Institute, in order that legal advice 1 might be obtained and authority for^ the local institute to take proceedings at law. At Inveroargill a. house, owned by Mis» T?a'*GTeavos. with its contpnfs. was destroyed by fire on Monday. The building was , insured for £300 and the contents for £l£o 1 in the Commercial Union Office.
The Taieri Drainage Commission has been granted an extension of time until the 31st inst. for forwarding its report to Government.
