EDUCATION STATISTICS.

The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended March 31, 1906, which have been compiled by the secretary of the Otago Education Board, show that there weie 126 schools in operation in this district, employing 198 males and 312 female teachers. The number of pupils on the rolls at the beginning of tho quarter was 18,031, and at the end of th« quarter 19,458, comprising 10,032 boys and 9426 girls. The average attendance was 896 C boys and 8369 girls, making a total of 17,335, being 26 more than the total for the previous quarter, and 220 less than for the March quarter, 1905. The number of pupils admitted I during Ihe quarter w?s 1105 boys and 1090 ' girls;— total, 2195. | The averages of the city and suburban | schools for the quarter were: — Kaikorai, 652; j Albany Street, 609; Forbury, 578; George Street, 541 ; Caversham, 527 ; High Street, I 494; Union Street, 482; Arthur Street, 477; North-East Valley, 470; Normal, 409; Macandrew Road, 408; Mornington, 398; Kensington, 233; Ravensbourne, 162; Musselburgh, 153; i St. Clpir, 117; Anderson's Bay, 115; Wakari, 86; Lei^h Valley, 48. The attendances at Oamaru were: — North- School, 312; South, 304; Middle, 253. At the District High Schools: — Port Chalmers, 409; Balolutha, 308; Lawrence, 257 ; Mosgiel , 248 ; Tokomairiro, 232 ; Palmer3ton, 225; Tapanui, 168; Naseby, 154; Hampden, 124. During the' quarter the Kuriwao and Tarras Schools were reopened. Household schools were opened at Lee Stream, Puketoi Station,, and Wairuna Estate, and a new school was opened at Lauder Railway Station. The Colonial Treasurer acknowledges the receipt of 2s sd, forwardeo. to the Railway Department as "conscience money* to the Government by a person unknown.
