SOME HEADS.

j. Thomson plays brilliantly AT OAMARU. By* JlilrxsEß, in Daily Times. *-A Magnificent Shot Under Difficult Conditions. — "During the progress of the Oamaru tournament some exceedingly fine play was witnessed, and of the players who were foremost in executing difficult shots under circumstances which mark the play as full of merit none were more prominent than J. Thomson, the veteran Dunedin Club skipper. Right through the four days he upheld his great reputation, and, but for the rather faulty play of his first and second players when meeting Carswell's Tink in the semi-final of the Citizens' Prize, must have just about carried off the first prize. In the diagrams below I have endeavoured to reproduce one of the heads—

the last -head in his game against D. Scoit'»* strong Roslyn team— in _ which _ the latter "were lying, gamte^when. Thomson had a 'bowl to g0... It .was. a great game, .especially on the part of 'Roslyn, who, with two ends to play/ were 8 -down. This they wiped out, securing.. a 3' at the fifteenth' head and 5" at the sixteenth head, making scores even. The Meadowbank Green was particularly keen, and: it was a matter of extreme difficulty to keep the bowls on 'the green in playing a l&ng end- As will be* seen from. figure 1, Roslyn Jay game -when !• .Thomson took' up his" last bowl.' After some consideration he decided that' his only" hope would be to take a run at Scott's shot howl.

It will be seen from figure 2 that Thomson made no mistake, for hevcame almost full on to the shot bowl, and thus pulled hi< rink through one of the warmest games oi the tournament.

In the .above game the Hoslyn- team, played a steady game, and although Thomson's side won I think, taken all round, Scott and his men had the worst of the luck.
