OTAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY
The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago A. and P. Society, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs Jas. Hazlett (President, in the chair), A. Todd, J. Gow, W. Burnett, J. Elliott, J. R Scott. T. Muir, W. S<uter, J. W. Blair, J. Shiel, G. H. MacEwan, and E F. Dutbie. Apologias were receivca fioin Messrs P. Pattullo, J. Ar.gus, J. Rcss, A. Johns-Mi, W. Blackie, J. A. Roberts, and T. Ritchie. , , Mr Jas. Rosß, Kartigi. wrote stating that he was about to pay a visit to the Old Country and wished to tender his resignation as a member of committee.— lt was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Mr Scr.ter. seconded by Mr T. Muir, that Mr Jas. Ross bo granted leave of absence for his visit to Great Britain, and that the committee wish him a pleasant trip Home and a Bafe re' urn to New Zeala.nd. Mr W. Blackie wrote stating that he bad a heavy bullock on hand which would bo suitable for the Guessing Competition at the winter show, if so desired by the committee. It was resolved that Mr Blackie be thanked for the offer and be du'.y advised when the V." inter Show Sub-committee has dealt with trip matter of arranging. Messrs J. B. MacEwan and Co. wrote re testing of herbs, and stated that they understood that the Palrnerston North A. and P. Association was agitating for the institution of competitions for dairy farmers and their sons to do practical testing of milk at/ their winter show, as by educating farmers and thoir sons to do milk testing it would assist a great many of them to get rid of unprofitable cows, -which in many cases did not pay for the feed they ate. It was pointed out that if «ffect could be given to something in this direction at the coming winter show <he writers would be prepared to give a fanners' band tester as a prize to the winner. Messrs J. B. MacEwan and Co. added that they would like to discuss the matter of condiitons, etc., with tho Dairy Commissioner, but this need not interfere with the society going on with the matter at once if it thought it advisable. — It was unanimously resolved that Messrs J. B. MacEwan and Co. be heartily thanked, and that a committee be set up, consisting of Messrs Scott, Todd, Duthie, and MaoEwan, to arrange details, and, if possible, give effect to same for the coming winter show.
For the Field Turnip Competitions fudges were duly nominated, and it was resolved that tbey should proceed on their tour of inspection in April. Th 6 question of the dates of the coming winter show was gone into, and after considerable discussion it was resolved that, owinj to the lateness of the harvest and the backward nature of the green crops, the dates of the winter show be altered from the third week in May to June 6, 7, 8, and 9 — a fortnight later than previously arranged for.
A large amount of detail business was considered and dealt with in connection with the coining winter show, which promises to be most successful, as ample accommodation is now provided for all exhibitors by the erection of the new and well-lighled Brydone Hal!. The Chairman urged all the members of the committee to do their best towards making the fixture of this year ever, more successful than its predecessor?.
The special Gabdzit Fertilises made up b? Nimmo and Blaib will be found to give excellent results when used fox Flowers and Vegetables ; also for Pot Plants, in and out of greenhouse. It is put up in 71b bags, at 1» W each. Ask your gtorekeeper for it.
