WHOLESALE PTOMAINE POISONING.

ABOUT ;50 PEOPLE ATTACKED. THAMES, MARCH 19. A great sensation was created at Paeroa this afternoon when about half a hundred people who were in attendance at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club races were attacked with ptomaine poisoning. Amongst the eatables supplied at luncheon was potted tongue, and it is believed that this was the cause ol the attack. Some of the cases were most serious, and it was feared that there would bo loss of life. Some were attacked so seriously that they had to be earned to Paeroa on stretchers. The hotels were for the time full of sick people, and there was great excitement as the new. spread, and consideroble anxiety. Among those attacked were— Sergeant Af'Kmnon (Waihi), Detectives Denorville and Miller, and Constable Beddek. and other policemen. Messrs Fielder, H Bu=h, and Wallace (Paeroa) were also ill, but are now in better condition- Mrs R. Montgomery and A. Montgomery were in .a serious condition. Messrs Royal (Komata Valley), Moresby (Waihih Hiss M'Entcer (oi Thames). Mrs E. Sbaw (Feilding), Mr Connolly (Karangahake), and a boy named Henderson were also attacked, but are reported to be out of danger. Many were attacks^ • but there are no casualties so far.

The Victoria, which left Auckland fot Sydney last week, had included in h<»r cargo one box of gold valued at £3359, 13 bars of bullion valued at £8800, and 445 cases kauri gum for Europe.
