The Caversham election resulted in the leturn of four Temperance candidates- and one Moderate. Mr F. O. Shaddock headed the poll with 1532 votes, and Mr S. Elliott, the Moderate candidate, defeated Mr W. J Love, the fifth Temperance candidate, by the small margin of five votes, the respective totals being : Elliott, 1411: Love, 1406. Shacklock F. O. The history of the looal option poll being ■upset will be fresh in the memory of most persons, and the consequent appointment by the Government of a committee consisting of Messrs Innes, Mill, Gore, Crawley, and Hodge, all of whom, with the exception of Mr Hodge, were Independents. All these gentlemen sought re-election at the hands of the electors, but only Messrs Mill and Hodge were among the successful candidates. Josiah Ward .. 1148 Wm. Crawley .. 1035 John Mill .. 1144 Wm. The fact that reduction was decided upon by th« «lectore of Taieri at the local option poll in December imparted additional interest to the election of a. lioensing committee in that electorate on Tuesday, and a keen contest for supremacy took place between the rival parties — the temperance advocates and the representatives of the moderates. At one stage it appeared probable that the necessity of contesting the election would be obviated, but owing to the fact that one of the .nominees of th« licderate party insisted upon going to tbe

poll the projected compromise collapsed, and each party nominated five candidates. No doubt the action of the gentleman referred to had a detrimental effect upon the prospects of the party which he represented, and this, coupled with the strong temperance sentiment indicated by the last local option poll, probably accounts very largely for the substantial victory gained by the nominees of the Temperance party. As will be seen from the subjoined figures, the whole of the Temperance candidates were returned, the highest of the Moderate party being defeated by 96 votes. It may be worth noting at this stage that the Moderates' representatives have held office in Taieri electorate for the past 12 years, and also that Tiice-day's election. wa6 the first to be contested for nine years.
