The Devolutionists in Dublin South will oppose Mr Long, as they prefer to support the Nationalist candidate. [Mr W. H. Long, ex-Chief Secretary for Ireland, was defeated at Bristol last week.] Wishing to strike at the father through the son, the Nationalists, have directed 1000 Irish voters in Midlothian to vote against Lord Dalmeney. The Labourites attribute their successes to their systematic reorganisation after the Taff Vale judgment. January 23. The Liberals also gain: — Derby Southern.— H. H. Raphael (L.). [In 1900 this seat was won by John Gratton, jun. (C), who polled 6073 votes to 5707 polled by Mr Raphael.] Harrow". — J. CSibb (L.).' [In 1900 Mr Irwin E. B. Cox (C.) was elected unopposed.] Accrington. — Sir Joseph Laese, K.C. (L.). [Sir Joseph, who has been re-elected, defeated E. Nicholls (C.) in 1900.] Leigh. — J. F. Brumier (L.). [In 1900 C. P: Scott (L.) polled 5259 votes and W. YV. A. Fitzgerald (C.) 5119.") The Labour Party gains : — Gordon District. — Hodge. [In 1900 E. F. G. Hatch was elected for this seat, polling 5761 votes against 5141 polled by W. Ward, who was then the Labour candidate.] Down East. — Craig (U.) defeated the late member. James Wood, who was a Russellite or Independent. Launceston. — C. Marks. [This seat was held by Mr J. F. Moulton (L.) in the last Parliament by a majority of 1100 over his opponent.] Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, speaking at Larbert, said he was delighted that the old delusion that the Unionists were the special guaidians of the agricultural interests and the particular friend of the farm labourer was knocked on the, head. There was a tremendous disproportion of power, and he confessed the Liberal majority enormously increased the responsibility of the Government. Mr Chambenain, speaking at Halessowen, admitted it was unexpected that there would be anything like such a political revolution. There is anxiety in Johannesburg at the reported intention of the Government to alter the Constitution to give the Boeie greater power. A great public meeting is threatened. January 23. Ex-President Steyn, speaking at Dewetsdorp on the occasion of the reinterment of some burghers killed in the war, urged mothers to remind their children of the sufferings of the concentration camps.
