CANTERBURY.
A man named Charles Benhain was convicted at Rangiora on the 14-th on a charge of attempting to commit suicide, on October 24-, by taking strychnine. He was ordered to enter into a recognisance for £25.
In Banco on Wednesday before Mr Justice Denniston Matthew Barnett appealed, against the decision of the Christchurch Stipendiary Magistrate fining him £5 for having trespassed on the Riccarton racecourse in April last. His Honor dismissed the appeal, with £7 7s costs.
Heavy rains ;n; n North Canterbury on the 14th stopped all sowing and shearing work. The weather still continues seriously unseasonable. D The takings at the A. and P. show last week were £1081, against £1480 last year. The decrease is duo to the wet weather experienced. . Mr J. Tighe, an expert on the education and employment of the blind, addressed a meeting at Christchurch on Friday. He advocated that an institution for the proper education of the blind should bo established in Christchurch -for the SoutK Island, and that the funds at present going; from the Sonfeh Island towards the support of the institution for the blind at Auckland should be diverted for the purpose. A committee was formed in order to further the scheme.
On Saturday afternoon the police arrested John Byrne on a charge of having caused actual bodily harm to Jane Johnston, alia,' Dollie Jameson, who died of consumption \ few days ago, and who was suffering from a broken jaw at the time of her death. She lived with Byrne, and at the inquest touching her death the foreman stated that the jury considered the man Byrne should be severely censured for not obtaining medical advice when the woman broke her jaw.
At Lyttelton John Erie Peterson, seaman, was committed for trial on a charge of attempting to cut the mooring line of the steamer Canopus at the wharf at 11.20 p.m. on Friday. The rope was half cut through. Peterson, who was seen apparently interfering with the rope, said he was drunk, and did not remember. The total amount promised towards thr consumptive sanatorium is now £2166.
