A NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERN-
(Australian Meat Trades Journal.) A specimen of the literature the New
South Wales Agent-general is issuing in London has reached us. We reproduce a few pars for the amusement of our readers : — 1. "New South Wales offers greater attractions than any other country to s-ettlera desiring to make a living in pi-ofitable agricultural pursuits." 2. "To men with a small capital — say. £200 — the Government offers unrivalled; opportunities to secure land at nominal rates. Improved farms valued at £3 to £4 an acre may be obtained by payment of 5 per cent, instalments on the value of the land." 3. "A farm valued at £500 may be obtained for £25 per year." (Yet we have, men leaving for Queensland and elsewhere.) 4. "A crop of 17 bushels gives a profit of 30s per acre." (Our average for 10 years is only 9.7 bushels.) 5. "The total cost of sending wheat to
Great Britain from our wheat centres is only- 7d to Bd' per bushel." (It is Is Id at the very lowest.) 6. "Millions and millions of fine wheat lands are awaiting the settler." (Where?) 7. "The climate of New South Wales is one of .its chief assets. No expensive feeding of stock is necessary, such as has to be incurred in countries with prolonged winters." (What do our sheep and cattle owners, who have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds — and are still spending_ it in places — to keep their stock alive, think of that?) 8. Dairy Farm. — "The average returns per cow are generally £10 per annum, but many herds return up to £12." (£8 is about the New Zealand average, and it is less liere.)
