RETURNED FROM ZION CITY.

AUCKLAND, October 31. Mr and Mrs Thomas Hood 1 , Mrs $. M'Gregor, and Miss Halpen, Wellington emigrajit3, returned from Zion City by ■fehe Sonoma to-day, full of wrathful condemnation of Dowie and his methods. They report that the lace factory has been closed, and that the other factories t&at are working have reduced their hands, and will probably be closed down shortly. Money is scarce-, and work almost impossible to get. Trie whole thing was th« greatest deo&ption of the age-, hundreds leaving the city, while hundreds of others are unable to leave for want of money. Nobody prospered but Dowie and his few paid autocrats. The town had a neglected appearance, and was not up. to a good New Zealand country town. Dowie was endeavouring to raise 12,000,000d-ol to get Zion out of its financial difficulty, and start a new place in Mexico. Nobody dared to^air his opinions in Zion, which was all right enough morally for people with plenty of mone}-, but hopeless for the worker dependent on his earnings. The workers weie paid in paper money, allegedly cashable, but in truth it was only with the greatest difficulty. House property was purohaseable cheap, but rents were high.

(Per Sonoma, at Auckland.)

A despatch from Chicago dated October 5 says : — Despatches received here to-day indicate that the Mexicans are- very hostile to the plans of John Alexander Dowie to establish a colony there and their opposition has become so hostile that the troops have been ordered to protect the property of Elijah 11. It. is said a large consignment of stores sent ahead for the men who will erect temporary buildings ha* been burned, and the Mexicans threaten to burn Dowie's buildings as fast as they are erected. Reassured by the friendliness of President Diaz, Dowie will go ahead with his colonisation plans, but his followers in Mexico are reported as greatly alarmed despite the presence of a large detail of rurals appointed to guard them. There were rumours at Zion City that if the opposition became too marked the plantation idea might be abandoned. The Dowieites say religious intolerance is responsible for attacks upon them in Mexico as it was in Chicago.
