HOW CAN WE TELL?

We have no mnsic meet! Above our beads the starry dome doth swell ;

The dead are at our feet.

The sea along the shore

Doth roll with hollow sound ; The cataract, with muffled roar,

Falls through the glen profound.

The tender grasses deck

' The earth with vernal green; The wintry storms their force and fury wreck Upon the pines that spire the sullen hills between.

The eyes that shone are dim with pain ; The stricken creature calls; The night upon the earth again With triple daikness falls.

How can we tell?

We have no music meet. We trust that all will yet be well; With chi'.d-hke faith we cast ourselves at Jesu's feet.

— Charles Oscab Palmeb.' Kaikoura, October, 1905.
