Mr A. J. Neilson, chess editor of the Falkirk i Herald, forwards an interesting budget of news in the shape of a roll of slips of his chess column. Ihe deaths are announced of M. Arnous de Riviere, th© veteran chess player of Paris, * sometime manager of the Monte Carlo chess J tournaments, and of Herr Karl Kondelik, the ' famous problem composer. ' Mrs W. J. Baird, Brighton's " Queen of j Chess," renowned as the foremost lady pro- ■ T>iem composer of Great Britain, is preparing ! another new book for the press. I A match between F. J. Marshall, the young ] American master, and Dr Tarrasch, champion of Germany, is proceeding afc Nuremberg, under the auspices of the German Chess Asso- j ciation. Dr Tarrasch has won the first game, and the second and third were both drawn. The match is of eight wins— draws not to count. Georg Marco, champion of Austria (says an exchange), is little short of a Hercules, physically as mentally. The burly Austrian not only participates in masters' international toiirnaments, but his mind at the same time is occupied, with journalistic duties of considerable scope.
