MARLBOROUGH.

On the ?.lst ult. Harry Norton, a young

man. a resident of the historic Te Await i" whaling station in Marlborough Sounds, was presented with a gold mec'al and address, subscribed by a number of admirers, in recognition of an act of braveryperformed by him in June last, in saving his father fiom drowning in Cook Strait. The Mayor, who made the presentation, referred to the circumstances of the deed as particularly meritorious. The party had made fast to the whale they were pursuing, and the boat was being rushed along in the rough part of the strait at the rate of eight to ten knots an .hour. The rope j knocked Mr Norton, sen., overboard, and j as the older man (though he had been j whaling for many years) could not swim the son jumped in after him and held him up until both were rescued. It is considered certain that the deed will be recognised by j the Royal Humane Society. Young Norton is a halfcaste. i The result of the Salvation Army's selfdenial effoit in Blenheim district is a total subscription o£ £260. This is a record, being £60 more than the previous return. I On Thirsday afternoon the engine of tie train from Picton to Blenheim was knocked off the line at Tuamarina by a slip, which came down the hillside with the approach !of the train. The passengers were transj ferred to another train, and the service | was slightly disorganised, but the slip has now been cleared away.
