PORT CHALMERS BOWLING CLUB.

The season of the Port Chalmers Bowling Club was formally opened on Saturday afternoon, when a very large number of j members and friends, including a crowd of [ ladies, winsome in their spring fixings, I gathered at the green. Mr J. H. Grey (president of the club) welcomed the visitors, and declared the green open. He was sorry that the long spell of wet weather had so saturated the ground that it was impossible to begin play that afternoon; but the day was delightful, the company numerous and congenial, so that one way and another they'd still got something to be thankful for. He was glad to say that, thanks to the expenditure of large sum on the improvement and drainage of the green, play would be resumed this year under the best conditions. He hoped, this being so, that they would be cheered by the coming forward of many more young players to uphold the grand old game. He hoped, too, that members would lose no opportunity to coach and encourage the younger players, so that, whenever for any reason an older player dropped out there might be a man fit and able to fill the vacancy. There would be a fair number of prizes for competition this year, and an increasing number of club matches would be played in Dunedin. Mr Moneon, one of the- old members, also spoke a few graceful words of welcome to the visitors. Mr E. G. Allen, M.H.R., aaid Mr Pryor, the opposing candidate, were present, but as the state of the green was unfavourable the onlookeis were deprived of the pleasure of seeing a game between the political rivals. But even this disappointment die! not greatly dim the exhiliaration of the day. The weather was superb, and Port Chalmers looked its best,,
