KAITUNA BOWLING CLUB.

After oxpeiiencing some disappointment in the matter of opening the green, due to the pievailing unsettled weather, the Kaituua Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club opened the bowling season, so far as it is concerned, on Saturday afternoon, under the meet favourable conditions, save and except that the green was of necessity, after Friday's rain, somewhat damp and dead. The afternoon was beautifully fine, and the large attendance of members was very materially increased by the visitors and ! friends who visited the Kaituna Club's picturesquely-situated grounds, partly with the object of having a game and partly for the purpose of criticising the play of others, but principally, no doubt, to do honour to the occasion. There were many representatives from other clubs present, and among them were Messrs T. G. Young, R. F. Smith, M. Sinclair, C. S. Reeves, J. Gilmour (Dunedin Club), J. F. Evans (Caledonian Club), T. S. Culling, J. M. Gallaway (St. Kilda Club), L. Pope (St. Clair Club), J. A. Millar, and W. C. Allnutt (Roslyn Club. The green was looking paticularly well, and on play being commenced it was evident it was running as well as it looked. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs laylor and Mrs Thomson, the wives of president and vice-president respectively, and these had the assistance ot quite a host of young ladies, whose presence added considerable charm to the whole proceedings. Ladies also dotted the tennis courts on either side of the green, and pretty well all the seating accommodation round the green was occupied by ladies. Mr W Taylor, in declaring the green open, expressed his pleasure at being back among them again after his trip. He then proceeded to welcome members, and more especially visitors, to the club's opening function, and hoped all would have a very happy and agreeable afternoon. Speaking of the excellent condition of the green, he paid a high compliment to the green-keeper, Mr Hooking, for the care and attention he had bestowed upon it. He (Mr Taylor) had seen a number of greens while on ris visit to the Old Country, and though many of them were larger, none had prettier surroundings than their own Kaituna. The club had gained some new members anJ a few were leaving them, going to new districts, and he was sure the members would join with him in regretting the loss the club sustained by the departure .from Dunedin of Mr Davis. He also mentioned the names of the late Mr Rattray and the late Mr Cook, both of whom he referred to m feeling terms, though he recognised another and future occasion would be more suitable to speak at any length of the high esteem in which they wera held. Before closing his remarks he would like to draw attention to the services Captain Sundstrum had rendered. Captain Sundstrum had always been a valuable and indefatigable member of the club, and had always looked wll after its interests. Mr Taylor then declared the green open, and called upon Mrs Taylor to roll the first bowl, which that lady did amidst applause from the onlookers. The green having been declared open and the first bowl played, the time-honoured match, President v. Vice-president, waa, played with the following results: — P. V.P. F. H. Botting, J. irkle, E. F. Dr Black proposed a vote of thanks to the ladies for the afternoon tea provided, and this was acknowledged on behalf of the ladies by Mr Taylor. Nine new members were elected, bringing the membership of the club up to 100. w
