HOUIPAPA.
November 2.— On Wednesday, Ist inst., Mr D Stewart, Government candidate for Clutha, paid this district a visit. The weather, ' which has been, •and still is, broken and -wet. was at its best— » nice, bright day, followed by a warm night. This had the effect of bringing together a large number of the sterner sex, with a sprinkling of ladies, to hear the address. It must have been extremely gratifying to Mr Stewart to meet and address the largest representative gathering that has ever assembled m the Houipapa Schoolhouse. After being introduced by the chairman ("Mr "Wright) the speaker thanked tho people of Houipapa. for their support at the last election (when he had a large majority of votes here;, and said he hoped they would support him as well this iime. His speech which was very well received', woivld have been better had he quoted less of Mr Malcolm's sayings and doings, and given us more of his own views on different subjects. Mr Malcolm has not visited this little corner cf the electorate this election, nor at any otbe'r time, so far as I know; consequently he 19 practically unknown, and I wouia suggest that if he wants to score a vote at all here he had better come and express his views. At the close of Mr Stewart's addiess a. number of questions weie asked, and were answered /fairly satisfactorily. Mr Mackenzie proposed a hejirty vote of thanks to the speaker for his address. This wa<s seconded by Mr Thomas Bates, and. carried almost unanimously. A vote of thanks to the cha.ir terminated the meeting. Weather— The weather, although better, is still broken and unsettled.
