BAREWOOD.
November 4. — A most successful entertainment was held in the Barewood Public Sal) on the evening of Fiiday, Octojjer 27 — the trustees of the hall taking a new departure and holding a concert and dance, instead of, as before, a concert and dance, with ?-jn°s at intervals. A most excellent prognuime was submitted, which met with great approbation. After a few opening remar.es Ly the chairman (Mr James G-arrett)^ Mrs Tho-u son and Mr Hutton gang a duet, "Hai', smiling morn." They also conr l ,ilj>iu-d two other duets throughout the even rig. entitled ' The singing lesson" (encored) anil ''Life's dieain is o'er." Songs were renewed ty Miss Garrett, "Caller Herrin" (in charade)^ , Mrs Thomson, "A hundred pipers ' and ' The carnival" (encored); Mrs* Ewarfc, "Sleet* aiid forget"' ; Mr Hutton, "The skipper," and a« a recall number "Annie Laurie." also "The standard on the .Braes of Mar," for which he was again recalled. A novel item was 'endered by Mr Fredrickson. who sang a Nori wegian song. Excitations were given by Miss A. Harrison and Mr Hutton, and n romio reading by Mr F. Harrison. Instriuimtal music was represented by two pianofoile s^.os *by Miss Dawson and a cornet solo by Mr Curtis. The programme was brought to a close by two dialogues, the first, eirVecl "Wanted, a General Servant." the chicaoinvs being ably sustained by Misses \ . and b. Rutherford R. Garrett. and "K. Harrison, and Mrs J. Rutherford and Mrs T. Garrstt; the second "By Train to Mouro." the r>arts t<irg creditably filled by Miss A. Harrison and Mr and Mrs T. Garrett. The accompanists ior the evening were, Miss Dawson and Mrs T. Garrett. After supper had been handed round dancing was freely indulged in until tbe early hours of the morning. Songs were rendered throughout the dance by Mrs Thomson and 'Mrs Ewart. and MessTS Hutton Msrrtonald and Langley. all being encored, wiurti 'speaks volumes for the talent or the performers. Mr T. Garrett made a very efficient ftl.C. A vote of thanks was pawed at the clo=e of the dance to Messrs D. M-'DoTvald. Holt, F. Harrison, and "W. Curtis, who sunplied the music for the dance: and the thank? of the trustees are due to Mrs Ewart who lent her piano, which added great y to the success of the entertainment: also to those visitors who came from Midalemfcreh. Dunedin. and Hindon.
