ACKNOWLEDGMENTS.
The illustrations are principally from photographs specially procured from E. W. Wilson and Sons, but several are reproduced from a Nelson number of the Navy and Army issued some time ago. The plans illustrating St. Vincent and Nelson's chase of Villeneuve are copied from Mahan's •' Life of Nelson " ; and those of the Nile, Copenhagen, and Trafalgar are from Longman's "Historical Atlas." The reading matter is based upon Mahan's works— books that should be in every library; '-Social England," edited by Traill; "The Royal Navy: a History" — a very fine work in six volumes, edited by William Laird Clowes, and containing articles by specialists; the writings of H. W. Wilson, Hutchings, and others more or less familiar to readers of naval history. Though quotations are generally acknowledged, it haa not always been possible to do so. on account of slight modifications and because words or phras>es are often incorporated in a sentence.
