NELSON GOES TO THE WEST INDIES.
Finally, Nelson made up his mind to go to the Indies. He left Gibraltar on May 7, just about a month behind his quarry, and reached Barbadoes on June 4. The movements of the two Admirals in the West Indies we have not space to map out; suffice it to say that Villeneuve, on hearing of Nelson's arrival, scuttled for Europe on June 8, or thereabouts, and was followed on the 13th by Nelson, who arrived at Gibraltar on June 18. Nelson went over the Victory's side for the first time in all but two years : and Cornwallis, at Brest, had an almost equa'ly long watch, since he never cast anchor for 22 months ! On the 22nd Nelson set c ail for the Channel, where he handed his fleet over to Cornwallis, and, going on in the Victory, hauled down his flag at Portsmouth on August 18.
