There is no new business over the Melbourne Cup. Pius was backed for the Caulncld Cup to wm £4000 at 100 to 1 ; 100 to sis now offered.
Marvel Loch and Warroo are equal favourites for the Caulfield Cup at 100 to 8. Emii has been backed to win £3000 at 100 to 3 anc'l 100 to 4.

Pius 1 is being backed for the Caulfield Cup, and is now quoted at 20 to 1. Marvel Loch, Stepout, and Warroo are equal favourites for the race at 100 to 8.
October 5.
Maniapoto was sent a mile and a-half this morning, which he coveied in 2min Sdsec. Roller, Simoda, and Position negotiated 10 furlongs in 2min 17sec. Gladsome strode over nine furlongs in 2min Isec, while Stepoui and Florin took three seconds longer over a similar journey. Kamo left 10 furlongs behind in 2min 14£ sec, and Marmont 11 furlongs in 2min 31sec. Harvest Home was given a mile, which took lmin 51sec, and Zepho put up similar time. Dividend did slow work, and is a veiy doubtful starter.
Emir has been backed for the Caulfield Cup, and is now quoted at 20 to 1. Marvel Loch has eased to 14 to 1 (offered).
Gladsome, having received support for the Melbourne Cup, has 'shortened for that race to 16 to 1.
Marmont has been backed for the Melbourne Cup to win *'3000 at 100 to 5. Maniapoto remains favourite. Marvel Loch has receded in favour for the Caulfield Cup to 100 to 7, Torah is quoted at 100 to 10, and Step Oiit and Warroo at 100 to 8.
October 6.
Torcii is now favourite for the Caulfield Cup at 9 to 1, for which Marvel Loch continues to recede.
Rosemead has been backed to win £4000, and is now quoted at 25 to 1.
Marmont is still being backed for the Melbourne Cup without the quotation being altered. Maniapoto holds his position as favourite at 8 to 1.
October 9,
Mar.iapcto, though still suffering from a cough, was sent 11 furlongs this moxning and cnnleled the distance, in 2min 32sec.
Toarali has hardened for tho Oaulfi-eld Cup, aiid is now quoted at Sto 1. Gladsome's pr^ce is 12 to 1 for tiho Melbourne Cup.
It is understood that the V.A.T.C, which holds a meeting to-morrow, will act similarly ta the Victoria Racing Club regarding Mr Wren's horses. It is a-.s>o awiderstood that the V.E.C.'e actions aae consequential on a resolution passed by trie Racing Conference requesting the Government to take action to suppress totalisator end sfc'Gp betting, which form of gambling, in the opinion of the conference, deteriorated horse racing.

— A Christclixtrch telegram advises that at 12.20 on Friday Jolly Friar was scratched for all engagements at the C.J.C. spring meeting.
— Joe Chamberlain was scratched for the New Zealand Cup at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The Inangahua Times says it is stated that Mr John Foster, president of the Trades and Labour Council, a resident of Denniston, is going to contest the Buller constituency.
A number of friends of Mr James Dignan are taking steps to get that gentleman to become a candidate for Auckland Central at the general election. Mr Dignan's father for years represented Auckland in the Lower House, and was subsequently called to the Upper Chamber.
A meeting of friends and supporters of Mr Alex. Marshall, the Ministerial candidate for the Taieri, was held in the Garrison Hall, Mosgiel, on Saturday night, when there was a good attendance. A strong committee was set up, and arrangements wcic made for the coming campaign. Mr Marshall will address the electors at Uairi Bush on Thursday evening next.
