OBITUARY.

A Hokitika telegram announces the death of Mr John Allen, of Ross, one of the first pioneers oil the West Coast. He was for many years councillor of the Borough of ROSS.£ Mr ' John Blacklock, of the firm of Calder. Blacklock, and Co., merchants in Invercargill in the early sixties, died in California in June last. Mr Blacklock was for" some time Provincial Treasurer of Southland.

News has be&n received of the death at Sydney .last we&k of Mr Samuel Marks, a retired brewer, who was well known in Dunedin. in the early sixties. The deceased appears* to have been seized while taking his bata with an apoplectic fit, which uroved fatal. The Rev. A." Dasent, who died at Wellington "on Friday last, was well known to many of the old residents of Otago. He was one of the hardy pioneers who thought nothing of travelling 30 or 40 miles in one day,, preaching and working amongst his parishioners. His first charge was at Waikouaitf,, and included a large tract of country between Blucskin and Dunstan, where he made periodical visits with his swag ta the mining camps. He leaves a widow, one daughter, anrl five sons. A Gisborne telegram states that Mr J.~ Quigley, architect, dropped dead in Hi© sheet on "Wednesday afternoon.
