THE SUEZ CANAL.
AN OBSTRUCTION BLOWN UP.
SUEZ, September 28.
The blowing' up of the sunken steamef Chatham took place to-day. The canal is blocked.
As a precaution against injury from tin blowing irp of the sunken steamer and her cargo, troops formed a cordon of five miles in diameter, whilst some ships wen? moored apart and others were strengthened at' their moorings.
September 29. A column, consisting of the Chatham's fragments and sand and water, rose to at height of 2000 ft and strew.cd the banks of the canal for a distance of 600 ft. Thtf east bank has been destroyed. Traffic will be resumed in the canal on Monday.
Lloyd's agent telegraphs that it is necfifr sary to again blow up the Chatham's stern. The bank of the canal is damaged. A) space of 250 yds by 70yds is blown away,and there is a hole of 110 f- under th« vessel. Traffic will probably be resumed in 10 days' time.

The official soundings show that the Sues. Canal has silted for a length of 80 metres (260 ft), with an average width of five metres.
