INTERNATIONAL ECHOES.
In the late match neither Grover, Dearborn, nor Reynolds played anywhere near their strength. It was the opinion that a meeting- in London of such a team with the best English six would prove interesting; then, after a brief rest, a trip to that hotbed of checkers, Glasgow, and a tussle with the Scottish dons. During the first afternoon's play, when three wins were called out for America in rapid succession, the genial Mt Bryson looked rather glum, but, as the British team evened up before the close, he brightened up, and, with a smile, was heard to say to one of the American team, "Aha, and ye thought you were going to have it all your am way." James Ferric, says the Pittsburg Disuatch, wishes to make known that he ascribes a large portion of the success of the visiting team to Richard Jordan, and the balance of credit to Wee Geordie Buchanan, an able, upright, honest laddie. These two freely and fully sank personal considerations for the general good of the teams, and their vast knowledge of the game was at all times fully and withoiit reserve ait the service of tho3e who cared to ask. and, in addition, little general daily lectures.
Barker missed the following two tit bits in the international: — Black on 5, 10, 28, kins on 31. White on 13, 21, 32. king on 22. Barker now played 21 17, totally overlooking the effect of planting his kine on the same square. Black on 2, 5, 10. 12, 14, king on 22. White on 13, 17, 20, 21, 29. king on 3. We saw Mr Morrall. the, English champion, play 14 38, to which Mr Barker replied with 8 11. Then 5 9, 13 6. 22 13. and then we found that Barker had crowned by 6 1. Mr A. W. Valentine, Rock Island. 111, pointed out that 20 16 wins easily. — Leeds Mercury Supplement.
