A return match by telegraph between the Oamaru and Otago Chess Clubs will be <-oiuniencecl nest Saturday evening. H. Gyles, jun., a yoiith of 17 years of age, has won the first prize in the annual handicap tourney of the Wellington Chess Club, and accordingly holds the Petheiick Shield for the ensiling 12 months. His Excellency the Governor has accepted the office of pation of the New Zealand Chess Association. Entries for the tournament to determine the chess championship of New Zealand for the ensuing year should reach the hon. secretary, Mr C. W. Tanner, solicitor, Wellington, not later than December 12. The much-vexed qiiestion of new rules for the government of play throughout New Zedland has at length been definitely settled. A conference took place last week at Wellington between Mr S. S. Blackburne (representing the Rules Revision Committee) and. Messrs C. W. Tanner, B. B. Allen, E. J. Barnes, F. K. Kelling, and A. I. Littlejohu (representatives of the New Zealand Chess Council). A give-and-take spirit characterised ihe proceedings and agreement was ultimately airived at on all the issiies. At tiie exhibition of simultaneous play given by Mr D. Forsyth at the Otago Chess Club's rooms last week, the Rev. A. T. Chodowski took advantage o£ the opportunity to congratulate Mr S. S. Myers on his promotion to the lieutenant-colonelcy of the No. 1 Battalion of the Otago Rifle Volunteers. The rev. gentleman remarked that the Government must have taken cognisance of Mr Myers's skill as a strategist in chess, a sally which was greeted with much laughter and applause. Special prizes are being offered iv American chess circles to encourage the use of the "Danvers Opening" (1 P-K4, P-K4; 2 Q-E5). Quidnuncs are anxious to know who and what "Danveis" is.
