MARINE FISH BUTCHERY AND BIOLOGICAL STATION.
The. usual monthly meeting the Marine Hatchery ' Board was held in the office or Mr C. W. S. Chamborlain, in the Custom House,' on Friday, 22nd ult. The business was mostly of a formal nature, passing accounts, etc. In view of the expected arrival Fhortly of lobsters from the Old Country, the staging required to complete the lobster pond is now being gone on with, so that everything will be ready on the arrival of the Rangatira at Port Chalmers, where she is due about October 20. One great need of the station is a suitable jetty, and it is hoped that this will soon be erected. The board has been in communication with Pxofessor Mead, of Brown University, R.1., Commissioner of Inland Fisheries of Rhode Island, who has successfully solved the problem of rearing lobsters from the egg and has received from him all the literature dealing with the subject of his researches. If the lobsters arrive safely here, the boards expects to be m a position to deal with the ova, and thus stock the waters of the harbour and adjoining coast. Mr Anderton, the curator, has made himself thoroughly au fait with the work to be done in this direction. In tne meantime he has been rearing the eggs of the sole, and also making observations on the eggs and fry of various other fashes which, are met with in the harbour.
