Amongst tho sires seeking for patronage in So-ithlaod this season is Black and Red, the son of Maxim and the July mare Aqualate. jQ'ack and Red is a rich brown in cplour. stands 15,3. and possesses splendid bone and conformation He was brod by Mr G. G. Stead, who has proved hiiaself

cne of the most successful students of breeding known in Axistrala&la. Maxim, the sire of Black and Red, was got by Muslwt out ot Kedl sauon, a ciaiighter of Vespasian (son of Newminsrer) arrl Hopeful Duchess, who was by Galopi'i's sire, Tli3 Flying Dutchman His dam. Aqualale, was got by July (brother to Sir Modred out of the Apremoni mare Toredo. whose clam Nautilus produced Cynisca and Pygmalion, both of whom were also got by Api-pmont. Maxim won the Champagne Stakes, CJ C. Derby, Canterbury Cup, Middle Paik Plate, Ha^ke's Bay Guineas, and also proved his worth as a sire by leaving Bhiefire, Bbodshot, and other good performers before being sold for 4000gs to Mr J. B. Haggin, of the Rancho Del Pasco Stud, California, where his early death was a stroke of bad luck for his new owner, who, however, got some valuable horses from the son of Musket during bis brief stud career in America. Aqualate was a fair performer, and her son Black and ,Reel won over all distances. As a two year-old he won the D.J.C. Nursery Handicap, and amongst other wins he had were the D.J.C. Anniversary Handicap, one mile •and a-qnarter ; C.J.C Handicap, one mile; D.J.C. Forbury Handicap, one mile and a -quarter, fend others too numerous to particularise. Blaok and Red has some of the best blood to lie foun<3 in the Stud Book coursing in his veins, and the first of his stock to race in Black and Brown and Red and Black won raoes last season, and as they show promise of further success they should assist in keeping their sire's name to the front.

Another s-ire joiumenclsd to the notice of breeders is the imported American trotting stallion Lauderdak>. He is a dark bay hors.?, standing well over 16hds; showing great substance, witli good bone and feet, and, what is equally desirable in a stallion, a splendid temperament. On a racing track Lauderdaio had few equals in appearance, for a tmer-gaitod trotter" wouid bo hard to find. Though not developed or raced before leaving America, he was full of pro. nisc and won. at the first time of starling the Jubilee Handicap (in saddle), two miirs. at Tfhur«!>, Park on July 19. 1897 ; time, smin 37Eeo. He also won the Winter Handicap (in saddle, two miles, at C.T.C. meeting, May 19. 1893; time, smin lOisec ; and 'ater. High-class Harness Handicap, C.T.C. meeting, August 10 (two miles) ; time, smin Tsee. winning by the length of the fitraighi. vvith few cpporiunit'es, LauderJale has demonstrated Ins ability as a sire by crettina- such wellpprformed ones as Lauderhill 5.5. Avondalp. Laudervale, Ravfnsdale, and others. His stock are upstanding, showing quality and substance, and are a credit to their sire. Lauderdale was bvod by Colonel H. J. Thornton, California. Electioneer, sire of Anteeo, is the biggest record holder of the world, the greatest of all Hambletonian's descendants — sire of Sunol 2.35. Palo Alto 2.82, and a hundred others at 2.30 and better. As a further recommendation it shold not be overlooked that Lauderdale possesses a doub.'-o strain of the muchprized Hambletonian blood.
