There has been a fair* amount of betting in the local market over the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. For the latter event, Maniapoto has receded from 10 to 1 to 100 to 8, at which figure the Metropolitan winner is still favourite. The next in demand is Mahutonga, another New Zealander one! the best-backed horse in the market, being befriended to the extent of £3000 at 100 to 6, and 100 to 7. September 29. For some reason unexplained, even to the owner, the nomination ot Grand Rapids aaad ; two other horses belonging to the same owner were refused by the V.R.C. for the October Stakes and other events at the same meeting. The nomination for the Melbourne Cup -was I not interfered with.
