THE HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLEGRAM.

WELLINGTON, September 18. I The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, 16th mst. : — "The mutton market is weak, and there is an inclination to force sales. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 4Jd per lb, and for North Island mutton 3Jd per lb (light weights), and 32d and 3gd per lb respectively (heavy weights). The lamb market is dull owing to the poor demand, and the stock is accumulating. The average price today for New Zealand lamb (Canterbury brand) is 5d per lb, and for brands other than Canterbury 4id per >b. The beef market is quiet, and there is no change in prices. Supplies of River Plate beef are heavy. Prices: Chilled hinds, 3id per lb ; fores, 2Jd per lb. The butter market is steady, but without animation, and there is less demand. Prices are : Danish, 120s per cwt; Canadian, 107s; Australian, 110s. The cheese market is slightly weaker, with less demand. Canadian is quoted at 55s There w a better demand for hemp. The market is steady, and holders are firm. The price of New Zealand hemp, ' good fair Wellington ' grade, on spot to-day is £29, and ' for October-December shipments £30. The price of Manila hemp, ' fair current ' grade, on spot to-day per ton is £39. The cocksfoot market is quiet, but firm. The average price to-day for bright, clean, New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171b per bushed on spot, is 53s per cwt. The current Bradford quotations for tops are: 36's (low crossbred), Is 4d; 40 ; s (low crossbred), Is 4Jd ; 44's (medium crossbred), Is 6d; 50's (half bred), Is Sid; 56's (quarterbred), Is lOJd; 60's (merinos), 2s 3d."
