GENERAL ELECTION NEWS.
Dr Bamford, the Opposition candidate for City East at the coming elections, addressed a large and enthusiastic meeting at Auckland on Wednesday evening. He criticised the administration of the Government. He was in favour of the present liquor law and the Bible-in-schools referendum, also of the freehold tenure A Maori gathering was held at Horowhenua a few days ago for the purpose of selecting a candidate to oppose Mr H. Kaihau at the general election. Three Natives sought the suffrages of the electors, and Haere Simmons, of Rangitikei, found favour. He will address the Horowhenua Natives at an early date. It is understood here that Mr Joseph Petrie will contest the Grey seat in the Opposition interest, opposing the Speaker of the House. At a meeting of the- South Canterbury Hospital Board last week it was decided that a deputation be appointed to wait upon the North Canterbury Hospital Board to ascertain and' report upon what terni3 this board could co-operate with' them towards maintaining a consumptive sanatorium tor the. whole of Canterbury.
