Notes from Greymouth. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

GREYMOU6H, August 20. The weather conditions weTe ideal for dredging, and the returns in consequence are well up. The share market remains dull, though in the quartz line matters are beginning to simmer again. Promising reports from Garden Gully and New Creek (near Lyell), coupled •with the finding of very payable stone n-ear and the early resumption of work at* -the Wilber-force, have -caused/ attention to toe devoted to this line, and I shall not be surprised to see -considerabte^tfcijsrfty- 1 in quartz mining during the fdrthcoining^summer. The Pactolus Company's dredges are again to tfie front with a combined yield of 1320z 13dwt. Present appearances would indicate that " century " returns will be obtained during the next few weeks, notwithstanding th,e fact that the wash is again getting rough. The Bignell's No Town dredge obtained 40oz ldwt for 142 hours. The wash proper is very thin, some 4ft, but very rich, while the overburden,- which is very tight, is 26ffc deep. Under the circumstances the yield is a remarkably good one.

The Jamaesom's Steward dredge will wash up on Monday.

The No Town Creek dredge obtained 340z for 138 hours. A continuation of present satisfactory yields is practically assured. No. 2 dredge is getting on to better wash, and a few •weeks should see her recording returns.

The Blackwater River dredge got 250z 6dwt. A better sample of wash is expected to be struck this week.

The Callaghan's Creek dredge obtained 250z for 129 hours. There is no alteration to report. The Slab Hut Creek dredge got 21oz 7dwt for 110 hours. Timber is causing a good deal of trouble. The Mokoia dredge washed up 14oz lldwt. The dredge within the next few weeks should strike the main run of wash.
