GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. (Feom Our Special Co.rbespondent.) Fiest Day — Tuesday, August 15. The New Zealand Grand National meeting commenced at Riccarton to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance of visitors, including Lord Plunket and suite. The course was in excellent order, and some capital racing wat witnessed. Falls were plentiful during the day, but the riders all escaped eerious injury, though one of the horses in the Grand National Steeplechase was killed. The North I Islanders played a very strong hand in the proceedings, securing the whole eight events on the oard. Speculation was brisk, the totalisator investments amounting to £16,894, as against £15,330 last year. This was the beginning of a chapter of accidents, and by the time the second round waa entered op the field was reduc< i d_to Inniskillen, Pipi, Haydn, Phaetontis, and iiiatere, with Nadador struggling hopelessly in the rear. The stand double brought Kiatere down. Inniskillen, who had made all the running, still held command, with Haydn, Phaetontis, and Pipi following in that order. Turning into the straight Phaetontis ran into second place, but fell at ihe post-and-rails, and Haydn closed on the leader. Inniskillen jumped the last obstacle itearly two lengths clear of Haydn, and eventually won comfortebiy by three lengths; Pipi six lengths further back. Only the placed horses finished. The weather for the •second cay of the Grand National meeting was dull a.nd cold, and a thick fog which hung over the course mads it difficult at times to distinguish the horses running along the back stretch. Tha attendance, however, was large, Lord Plu.nke.l and party being again present. The racing was excellent, aaid some close finishes were witnessed. As on the first day, falls were numerous, but tbe riders were uninjured. In the big event of the day Romeo and Trumpery came to grief, sustaining injuries which necessitated their being shot. This order was maintained until passing the mile-post, where Romeo took command. At the next hurdle Romeo came down, and Trumpery fell over him. Passing the six-furlong post Waiwera ran to the front, and lad round the top turn, two lengths clear of Newtown and Tupara, with Creusot fourth. Turning into the straight the order was Waiwera, Newtown, Creusot, Daredevil, Tupara, Rungarawa, and Catherine Gordon. Oreusc-b and Waiwera took the last hurdle together, with D'aiedevil Tupara, and Newtown close up.
