GAMES.
A lively Muzio Gambit played in Moscow recently between M. Tschigorin, the Russian champion (White), and M. Geuika (Black): — White. Black. White. Black. 1 P-K4 P-K4 12K.-R1 Kt-Kt3-B 2 P-K B 4 Px P 13 Kt-K 4 Q-Kt 3 3 Kt-K B 3 P-K Xt 4 14 Q-R5 BKt2 4 B-B 4 P-Kt 5 15 B-Q R5 ! (a) The usual move here is QKtB3, and a familiar continuation; (11) QRK, QKB4; (12) KIQS, KQ; (13) BBS, RKKt. Black, however, had doubtless in mind a game recently published in St. Petersburg disclosing a very strong line of play after Black's (12) KQ, thus:— (l 3) QK2, Xt x Xt; (14) B x Xt, Q x B; (15) 883, QK3; (16) QRS, RK; a 7)a 7) QR4 eh, winning Q and B for R. (b) It is clear, however, that this is not the way to avoid difficulties'. Yet if PQ4, in the hope of getting rid of one of White's, pieces, then (13) QRS, BKt2; (14) R x P, etc., with a crushing- attack. (c) Black has really no option. If PQB3, (18) KtKto, PR3; (19) Q x Xt, P x Xt , (20) 883, and mate next move.
