NEW INVENTION.
' Our fellow-townsman Mr Thos. Morris has received by a recent mail an American parent for a very simple instrument that seems to promise well as an article of very far-reaching- utility and to meet a want felt by every person w.ho has been more or lees , used to outside life. It is simply a tent peg, or tether fixture, in the form of a i strong corkscrew. It screws into the earth in the same manner as a corkscrew enters the cork, but, in addition, has a locking device. It may be inserted into either hard ! or soft ground, and, from tests that have been given, ite resisting power is surprising. ( Of course, the instrument can be made in various sizes, with all degrees of strength, . according to the purpose for which it is required, whether for tethering 1 a lamb or an elephant, a six by eight bent or a marquee. It should be found suitable for a thousand-and-one purposes in all countries, while the cost of manufacture should be a mere trifle ; and hence, we may presume, the days of ' wooden te-nit, pegs and tether posts are num- | beted. We understand that a syndicate is i now being formed for the purpose of ex- | ploiting the patent' rights all over the civilised world, and that the possession of i the American patent is regarded as an assurance of its novelty. It is scarcely pro- , bable that such an invention will go long ■ a-begging for enterprising investors. I An apparatus has been patented, and will shortly be brought before the public, called Quertier's patent conveyor, providing a simple and easy method of removing the overburden of earth or other material from ballast and lignite pit®, railway sidings, etc., into trucks or to any suitable locality. It can also be u. c ed in railway construction or for roadwork", etc.
