OTAGO INSTITUTE.
The monthly meeting of the Otago Institute was held in the Museum on the 13th. the president (Mr J. C. Thomson) in the«chair. There was a crowded attendance. Messrs Charles Moore and I. S. de Beewere elected members. Dr Benham exhibited a specimen of an interesting mollusk discovered by Mr W. Fele. in Long Beach, and explained that it was allied to shell-bearing forms, though itself destitute of a shell. He also exhibited a cast of mesohippus, th© mioecne North American representative of the horse family, and compared it with the structure of the existing horse. Mr G. M. Thomson read a short note by Mr H. P. Young, of Orepuki, on the native names of the fuchsia. He also laid on the table a volume of views of the fish hatchery at Portobello, and mentioned the fact that in the late cold snap the whole of the blue cod in the ponds had died owing to the temperature falling to 3+deg. Fahr. Mr Thomson also laid on the table an advanced copy of the report of the meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, held in Dunedin last year. Mr W. B. Waters read an interesting paper on " Oil Engines,"' and Mr N. W. Stewart gave an account of his travels in parts of Siberia, Japan, and China, illustrated with limelight view§.
