Operations at th© oil well, which have been suspended for two or three days, were xesumed on Friday, when a column of mud impregnated with oil shot up about , 50ft, and continued until the cap was fitted 'pn the bore. Water and oil arc now issuing freely. " The manager is convinced that be lias a payable -well • Considerable excitement was occasioned in New Plymouth over the" news that petroleum had been struck at a bore near the breakwater.' The work" abandoned by a former company was taken up by- a local company some weeks ago. The bore was continued •100' feet. This week most promising indications were met with. After sinking two feet into sandstone strata small quantities o.f^oil were brought up. Mr Fair, the manager, is confident of success in a day or two. The bore is the deepest yet sunk, i The petroleum bore is improving. There as much less water in the bore. In three Jiours about 250 gallons of oil of high quality flowed, and the prospects are now better than ever. I The first dairy school in the colony, composed of 96 students from the Taranaki j isohools, was opened at Stratford on Mon"day. Members of the local Technical School staff are acting as instructors. The session lasts a fortnight. j
