COLLAPSE OF A WALL.
SEVERAL PERSONS INJURED. PALMERSTON NORTH; June 15. A -startling occurrence took place this afternoon. Owing no doubt to the brickwork being soaked by continuous rain, a . large section of the front wall of a building being erected in one of the principal busircss streets, Cuba street, gave way, several tens of brickwork and the scaffolding falling with a tremendous crash on to the street below. One man, Bert Chandler, was carried from the top of the building— a distance of 35ft. He had a thigh broken and sustained other injuries. Another workman named Flanagan was completely buried in the debris. His skull was fractured, and lie lies in a precarious condition. Other persons were slightly injured, and there were some extraordinary escapes. A workman named Riccards received injuries to his head. The Messrs Drayshan and Leslie, . of Blenheim, who were walking underneath, |
were knocked down. The former was ttken j to the hospital suffering from shock, but is not badly hurt. The rain still continues, and portions of the country are inundated by flood water.
