Tho youngster was a full brother to Lortt Soult and Marseillaise, both of which aretrained at Palrne'Tston North. The fact that Haydn is engaged in the big jumping races at Flemington next month -accounts for the .absence of his name from the [ Wellington Steeplechase list. In order to let Mr Chadwick have tho latest icm* to work pn^ the ■weights for. Welling;- 1
ten will net appear until after <!:e Napier Fark meeting Mr Chadwick was present at Wanganui and Elierslie, and viLl also be at Hastings and Napier Park. Mr C. Levant and Defoe returned from Auckland on Wednesday last. The latter showed signs of slight lameness behind and has been on the easy list. C. Pritchard thinks the reverse way of rucning at Ellersliu may account for the poor display Deias made. Levant, was on the track yesterday morning, and looks none the worse for the trip. Prit-ohaid has a dozen horses in work at present, including Betsy, who Sshows signs that she may not stand, and is to be sent home to her owner. The filly by San Francisco — Waitemata has done well since she cam© to theHutt. Magnificent has thrown off the soreness which troubled him in the autumn, and he is striding out in great style in the iruid. Pritchard has four horsos at Mr Paterson's stable, including that owner's Kaivku. J. Sai.diford has joined tho stable, and will do the light-weight riding next season. J. Eunier, who was head lad for H. Goodman at the Hutt, has gone south to join that trainer at Opmaru. Tiie light-weight C. Buchanan had an offer to go south, but will probably remain in this island. The contractors at the new racecourse at Tientham are at present labouring under great disadvantages. The work of carting in timber, gravel, tiles, and other material is very heavy. There has been a good deal of rain this month, and about the stands the place is a sea of mud The contractor has made fair progress, and this week so far finished the stewards' stand as ib get the tiles on the loof. The foundations of the new stand have been laid by the club, and the building will be proceeded with in a few weeks. The grass on the pours? proper has corns up well, and is fairly thick at the back, where the first sowing look place. Seme more top-dressing will require to be put on the track in the straight where the rain water has lodged. It is stated that at present tha owner oi Achilles has no intention of sending the chesir.ut to Australia. At the annual meeting of-members of the Rangitikei Racing Club this week, Mr F. J. Mansell, who for a number of year 3 has filled the office of honorary treasurer, was presented with a valuable diamond ring as a mark of esteem. Convoy and thaetonitis, Mr J. Bueklay's pair, were this week supported locally to wan the Grand National Hurdles and Steeples.
