PUKERUI JUNCTIONS.
June 16. — During the past month we have experienced a good deal of real winter weather. Frosts have been unusually severe for the month of May, if not for June as well. Farming operations have not, however, been much retarded, and good progress has been made with the work incidental to this season. Everywhere stock of all kinds are reported in good condition, -due, no doubt, to the abundance of feed in the autumn. Ere thia most have had time to reckon up their gains and losses for the past season, and the entire absence of complaint indicates that the balance has again been on the right side of the ledger. Were the results otherwise, it is certain we should hear a deal less of the outcry for the Government to acquire more estates for closer settlement purposes. The closer settlement of large estates has, without doubt, in a very large measure been the salvation of North Otago, and what this policy has done for these parts it will in all probability do for other centres. Dairy Factory. — The local creamery is still taking in milk on alternate days. Hitherto the management has not found it necessary to run on Sundays. If this course was nob found necessary in the flush of the season, it seems passing strange why it has to be adopted now, when most of the suppliers have stopped for the winter. School Committee. — The public meeting held on the 10th inst. for the purpose of electing a new School Committee for the oresent year was again poorly attended, just sufficient being present to elect a committee. The following were declared duly elected: — Messrs Cuthbertson, Ingram, Hartley, Dumbleton, Boyle, Holmes, and M'Pherson. Mr Cuthbertson was elected chairman, and Mr Ingram secretary. It was decided to hold another meeting in a fortnight. Library Committee. — A meeting was held on Monday, when it was resolved to replace a large number of worn-out books. It was also decided to order a number of new books. Winter Show. — It is satisfactory to know that North Otago still keeps up its reputation for prime butter. Mrs J. Craig, a local resident, was successful in securing two firsts (for fresh and powdered), and a third for butter eight days old at the Otago winter show. It seems a pity that the Waitaki County cannot b& fittiDjriy represented in th© counties' section. There is abundance of material, and thai of the first class. It only remains far a few of our enterprising fanners to club together and see the thing through.
