LAKE COUNTY.
June 17. — A heavy fall of rain in the early part of the week broke up the previous frost and cleared away all the snow except from the mountain tops. For a night or two it froze again, but just as the ice was almost ready to skate upon the weather again broke. This morning a red sky and mild atmosphere denoted an approaching change, and by midday tho sky was overcast, and it "was snowing lightly but steadily. However, as the ground ■was wet •with a thaw the snow did not lie. 1^ still has every appearance of more rough vreather, and probabiy will end in a heavy snowfall. Church Social. — A continuous and heavy rain c'urmg the whole of Tuesday and well on into ■'he night militated very much against the f-uccess of St. Peter's Church social, which was ,ield in the Town Hall, Queen&town, that evening. Considering the weather, the attendance was very good, a.nd the affair is regarded as so successful that another is to ba }:romoted at an early date. Within the hall everything -was 1 tastefully prepared. Tables were arramged for games, a nice supper was provided, and the musical items of the evening were -well rendered. Dancing was kept up till a late hour, everyone leaving well satisfied with the night's enjoyment. Those who contributed during the evening were: The Masters Aldridge, pianoforte duet ; Mrs Mussen and Miss Matthews, songs; and Messrs E. Keele and S. Firth, songs. The ladie3 of the guild, upon whom fell tne bulk of the work, deserve the thanks of the church for the success of their efforts. Frankton Hospital. — Dr Douglas left on Monday on a brief, leave of absence, his locum ten-ans being Dr Gow. Dr Douglas intends visiting Wellington. The nxxrse appointed to the institution will arrive there on Tuesday, and take up her duties immediately. Sales.— On Wednesday last Mr C. E. Gudgeon offered Messrs Gray and M'Millan's mining property at Tucker Beach for sale by auction, and at the same time put tip Mr E. Mills' s mining property at Muddy Creek Terrace, Upper Shotover. Neither of the properties was sold, it being evilent that there -were no buyers among the audience. I understand th« ; properties are for private sale,~and that there is a chance of both being sold. Queenstown Volunteers. — At the fortnightly parade last Tuesday good work was done by a good attendance of the corps. Captain George E-sid that evening made the following appointments; — Sergeant Gavin to be coloursergeant; Corporal C. Fraser to be sergeant; Privates Bobin amd Tallentire to be corporals. Arrow Mounted .Rifles. — A function of great '' interest is the annual ball of this corps — an event which comes off next Friday night in the Drill Shed, Arrowtown. The company has just been supplied with a new uniform of dark blue, with red facings, and much interest is evinced in the coming event. No doubt the attendance will be large, as previous years have demonstrated how successful these dances are. A meeting of the corps will be held on Friday evening to elect four officers:' Dissolution. — Messrs D. Eichardson and W. Murphy, who have for some time carried on a large blacksmith's and wheelwright's business in Arrowtown, have dissolved partnership by mutual consent. Mr Eichardson retires from the firm, leaving the business to be carried' on by' Mr Murphy under the style "W. Murphy and Co." The premises where this firm Las .carried on are comparatively new, and. are Replete --with all the latest implements and facilities for the work required " Wedding.^-i-On Wednesday last at Gardrona a pleasing wedding -ceremony was performed by Key. ,D. K. Fisher," who joined in matrimooiy Mr George Dudley, of Arrowtown, and* Miss Austin, of Cardrona. Miss Austin, sister of the bride, acted as bridesmaid, and Mr Joseph Miller, Crown Terrace, as best man. Both bride and bridegroom are well known, and both extremely popular. The ceremony over, the young couple drove to Arrowtown, where they mil reside. Miscellaneous. — I notice that Mr A. W. Scott, who for a long time has carried on the Deep Creek Hotel, at Gibbston, purchased these premises at the late W. Perriam's sale at the figure of £650. The new owner is popular and obliging, and should find the investment a" profitable one. — Mr W. Morrison, the new town clerk of Arrowtown, was installed in his duties last Monday.
