TOURIST DEPARTMENT.
Tho colony has been doing a great deal ie advertise its products. The Government despatched Mr Donne, head of the Industries and Commerce Department, to thei St. Louis Exhibition, when a great deal of valuable information about our country was disseminated broadca&t. Our exhibits there, tiiough small of course compared with that of the older countries, was one that attraoted much attention, and judging from the number of inquiries that have been reaching us officially from America, I have no hesitation in saying that good results have been achieved. We also, upon the initiation of our Commerce Department here, decided to show our products at the Crystal Palace. London. This attracted a veiry great deal of attention and received a large amount of commendation in the English press and attracted great numbers of letters from many people to our colony. The whole has been done comparatively cheaply, and has been a splendid advertise ment for our New Zealand products, — (Applause.') It, has shown what the colony can produce and has placed the scenic and tourist attractions before the people genelally. There is conclusive evidence in the Touist Department .n Wellington to show that great numbers have already visited, and many have decided to visit the colony as a result of the prominence that has been given in this respect both from Ame-rica-and. England. — (Applause.) I would like to take this opportunity of saying that the illusitrated weekly papers published in New Zealand, large numbers of which are distributed by tho tourist agencies, have done a great doal to bring tlie colony under the notice of many who knew comparatively nothing oi Now Zsaland. Thes>e payers are- produced in a most ailUtio manner, '•"fleeting the high-psl. credit upon the enterprising proprietors who turn out such splendid work — (applause), — and who have such a glorious field in New Zealand for obtaining subjects, and to which they did full justice. Shite the reduction of the pestago on weekly papers to a penny from here to the Old Country and other places I am informed there has been an enormous increase in the number of those weekly budgets despatched. Tiiey are without doubt splendid advertising mediums, and I am glad hi lay that much good has» resulted from this change — (Applause.)
