A GREAT DRAW.
The popular place of resort in town aft present for both town and country visitors is the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society's winter show, and there was another large attendance on Friday. The takings for the three days have exceeded the total for the three first days last year by over £100. A large number of school children were taken to see the show on Friday.
It may interest .many visitors to icarn that the ptirple-toD yellow turnips entered! by Messrs G. and~J. S. Nichcl, of Abbotsford Station, Clarks,, ivliioli gain&d first prize in their class at this week's show, were grown fully 1200 ft above sea level. They were the sixth crop in succession off the same ground, and had been treated with manure, 3J,ewt to the acre The turnips are beautifully shaped, and sound throughout.
Messre Donald Reid and Co. (Limited) exhibited a si and one of the principal features of which was the display of roots crown with Belfast manure, for which tho firm is sole agent in Otago and Southland. The quality and s ; ze of the turnips, mangels, carrots, and other roots in the display spoke volumes for ths efficacy of the manures used, the result in the case^ of turnips sown broadcast being particularly successful, and appeared to justify the increased sale reported throughout Canterbury, Otago, and Southland. The firm is alsc local agent for Sutton's seeds, and most of the roots exhibited were grown from these .eeed«, which have had a deserved name for high germination. Samples of the different classes of manures were also shown, as well as samples of clover seeds, ryegrass, and other sefds used in permaneint pastures. Fison's sheep dip, both liquid and powder, was also on show, and there was a large variety of seed oats and wheat, all sound and clean, several lots of which secured first award in thi-s show. Reid"s patent Titan and Triplex wire strainers, which now hay» an extensive sale not. only in Australasia, but in every country of the world where farming id cai-ried on, were also displayed in different forms. Altogether the stand was fairly typical of, and must be of considerable interest to, a farming community.
Amongst the most interesting and useful products shown at the . winter show this year was 311 exhibit by Messrs J. Nathan and Co. (Limited), of dried milk. A jug of milk was shown which was daily mad© from the product, and at the top could be ftsen a very thick lavor of cream, -thus proving tho pnreness of the dried milk. It is stated to be essentially useful for cooking, as the tin can be opened and used at any time, and the milk does noh deteriorate ia any way by the tin being opened and closed again. A plentiful supply of books containing recipes for cooking with dried milk was distributed, and these should prov-s very useful. This product is especially suited for districts where fresh milk is not easily obtained, and also for on board ship. If; is no%v in use at the various Government sanatoriums and other large institutions throughout the colony. This dried milk is manufactured at Bunnythorpe, in the North Island, and adds one more to the list of ihe many useful household commodities v. hiclt New Zealand has produced.
